Mexico got its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign off to a great start with a win over South Africa in the tournament’s opening match.
Playing in front of a packed crowd at Mexico City Stadium, El Tri gave its fans plenty to celebrate. Julián Quiñones scored the first goal of the match, and Raúl Jiménez added another to help Mexico earn all three points.
South Africa had two players sent off, as Sphephelo Sithole and captain Themba Zwane both received red cards. Mexico also finished with 10 players after César Montes was shown a late red card.

Even with the red cards, Mexico stayed in control and looked strong throughout the match. The home crowd created an exciting atmosphere and helped make the opening night a memorable one.
The victory gives Mexico an early boost in the group stage and builds confidence for the matches ahead. Quiñones and Jiménez were key players in the win, leading the way with their goals.
