Samia Suluhu Hassan has officially won a second term as Tanzania’s president, the country’s electoral commission announced. She received 98% of the nearly 32 million votes counted, keeping her in power after first taking office in 2021.

Suluhu made history as Tanzania’s first female president when she took over following the death of President John Magufuli. Her leadership has been seen as a milestone for women in the country’s politics.

However, her re-election has not been without controversy. Observers and rights groups have raised alarms about violence during the election period, with reports of hundreds of people being injured or killed. Amnesty International and other organizations accused the government of using harsh tactics, including forced disappearances and unlawful killings. The Tanzanian government denied these claims, insisting the vote was free and fair.

As she begins her second term, all eyes are on President Suluhu to see how she will address human rights and ensure a fair and safe environment for Tanzanians.
