At least 683 migrants have died or gone missing in 2026 while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea, according to the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration.

In the latest incident, a small boat carrying more than 100 migrants capsized after leaving Libya. At least two people have been confirmed dead, and many others are still missing.

Only 32 people have been rescued so far. The boat sank in a search-and-rescue area that is supposed to be managed by Libyan authorities.

A German aid group, Sea-Watch, said two nearby merchant ships helped save the survivors. They were later taken to Lampedusa, an Italian island that is a major entry point for migrants traveling to Europe.
