Severe floods have hit northeastern Nigeria, leaving at least 150 people dead and forcing more than 200,000 to flee their homes. The flooding began earlier this week after a dam broke near the city of Maiduguri in Borno State, sending large amounts of water into residential areas.

Whole neighborhoods have been submerged. Roads, homes, schools, and farmlands are damaged or destroyed. In an unusual twist, the flood also reached the city’s zoo, allowing some animals to escape into the streets, causing panic among residents.

Local officials say rescue efforts are still ongoing, and the number of casualties could rise. Around one million people have been affected by the disaster.

Floods are not new to northern Nigeria, but experts say this is the worst flood Maiduguri has seen in 30 years. The damage is even more serious because many people in the area were already living in temporary shelters due to ongoing conflict.
