Tanzania Vice President Dr Emmanuel John Nchimbi has tendered his resignation as the country’s Vice President. The decision, which comes less than a year after assuming office, has sparked debate over political dynamics within the ruling party.

In a letter addressed to the country’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Dr Emmanuel announced that he will officially cease to be Tanzania’s Vice President from September 4, 2026. Dr Emmanuel further cited sections of the Tanzanian Constitution under Article 50 (2)(C) and Article 149 (2) as the legal basis for his exit.

Dr Emmanuel also announced that he will not only vacate the position of Tanzania’s Vice President but also retire from politics and public service. While the notice cites the fulfilment of a promise he made to the country’s President that he would vacate the office whenever she needed to make changes, the statement has sparked debate over the status of his relationship with the current President.

Dr Emmanuel becomes the first serving Tanzanian Vice President to vacate office while still in office. Before being elected as Tanzania’s Vice President, Dr Emmanuel, a politician and diplomat, previously served under Tanzania’s former President Jakaya Kikwete as Home Affairs Minister, ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Secretary-General, and Tanzania’s ambassador to Brazil and Egypt.

Dr Emmanuel’s short stint as Tanzania’s Vice President comes at a time when there is heightened political tension as the country’s opposition leader, Tundu Lissu, fights treason charges in court. Tundu Lissu, the CHADEMA Party leader, has been in custody since April 2025.
