Severe flooding has hit parts of Mozambique, forcing tens of thousands of people to flee their homes. Heavy rains caused rivers to overflow, flooding entire communities and leaving many families trapped. The disaster is being described as one of the worst floods the country has seen in many years.
Rescue teams have been working nonstop to save people from flooded areas. Many residents were taken to safety by boats after water quickly surrounded their homes. Some families had only a few hours to escape before the water rose too high.

Those rescued are now staying in temporary shelters such as schools and churches on higher ground. Families arrived with very little, often carrying only a change of clothes. While they are grateful to be alive, many are worried about the homes and belongings they were forced to leave behind.
Community members have also played a big role in the rescue efforts. Boat owners helped save neighbors without asking for payment. Authorities continue to urge anyone still stranded to accept help and move to safety, reminding people that protecting lives is the most important thing.
